Benefits of Pet Ownership for Seniors

Pets are a very common member in many households throughout different phases in life.  For many people, they are considered family members.  Pet ownership in our senior years has many benefits.

One of the biggest benefit is pets offer love and companionship. Sadly, many people in their later years experience the death of their spouse or partner.  The loneliness that may result can be devastating. Studies have shown that seniors with pets feel 36% less lonely. Also, some studies show that interacting with pets can lower stress hormones and boost hormones that reduce depression and anxiety.

Having a dog can improve your physical abilities. Daily walking of a dog increases your steps, helping to improve your mobility and cardiovascular health and gets you outside. And it may result in meeting new people on the journey.

Studies show that taking care of a pet can also offer cognitive stimulation. Being responsible for their daily care, as well as remembering  veterinary appointments or other appointments such as grooming, help keep the mind sharp.

There are certain things to consider when thinking about getting a pet.
Physical limitations of the owner need to be considered.  Dogs need to have daily exercise, such as walking.  If mobility is an issue for you, the size of a dog should be considered as a smaller dog might be easier to walk.  And puppies and younger dogs are quite active and require more daily activity. Some pet owners prefer cats as many stay in the home and do not require walking.

Another consideration is how much space you have in your home to accommodate a pet.  Some people like birds or fish as they take up less space and don't require walking.  And physical safety is an important factor to consider.  Larger animals can be very energetic and be a tripping or falling hazard, especially when walking them outdoors. Smaller animals may be easier to manage.

There are financial considerations when thinking about pet ownership.  The cost of the food and veterinary care needed can add up.  And if you travel, boarding or pet sitting costs will factor into decisions. Many animals also need regular professional grooming.

Pets can bring such happiness and companionship to people, as they become one of the family for many. If considering getting a pet, take time to weigh the benefits and the drawbacks for you and your family.
